1st reading - Patten Recognition

Gibson blends technolgy, society and self until there’s no separation. The self has found comfort in forums and chat rooms (pg5). Life, love and business takes place in the “mirror world” which closely resemble objects and behaviors taken place in the real world.

On (pg8) Damien labeled Cayce’s fashion sense as, “CPU’s” Cayce Pollards Units. That’s the type of clothing she wears. CPU’s are either black, white, or gray and ideally seem to have come into this world without human intervention.”

While Cayce works in the world of marketing, branding and logos, why does her character make it a point of being a minimalist by having all the trademarks sanded down on jeans and watches?

  1. I also found this idea of CPU of interest.

Gibson says, "what people take for relentless minimalism is a side effect of too much exposure to the reactor-cores of fashion." Cayce has become "allergic to fashion" and as a result wears clothing that is
underwhelming and simple. To also go back to the idea of the Saturated Self, it seems that Cayce has become saturated and consequentially needs to simplify.
This reminds me of myself. I used to love synthesized music and electric instruments and the effect on me over the past 5 years has led me to sing almost exclusively within acoustic ensembles. I like the natural, un-processed sound much like Cayce likes the simplicity of the clothing she wears.
